11 WEB SITE FAVORITES FOR BUSINESS & FUN
3 Favorite Meeting Industry Sites:
Although slightly slow in loading, this is an excellent example of a well-designed CVB site. Notice the immediate segmentation into interest areas, the consistent navigation scheme throughout the site and the effective use of color.
A great idea for meeting planners looking for speakers. Unlike conventional speakers bureaus, where 20-30% commissions are charged, this site acts as easy-to-use communication vehicle charging speakers only for an annual listing and not a commission fee. The somewhat limited database of about 200 speakers is growing.
Occasionally a technology product comes along that opens your eyes with a significant “wow” factor. SightSpeed is one of them.
This very inexpensive, easy to use video conference system is one of the best I have seen with the quality being better than many higher-end, expensive video conference systems that I have tried.. All that is required is a reasonably modern computer, a webcam (the new USB models are cheap and easy to install) and a broadband Internet connection.
The free software download works in a manner very similar to AOL Instant Messenger with the buddies list and ease of contacting others. But instead of text, you get high quality video and audio. The lag time (a problem with past attempts with web-based video conferencing) is virtually undetectable. If fact, hearing-impaired organizations using sign language have begun to use this product because it works so well. I heartily recommend you to try it out. After having used it for a few calls, it makes a regular telephone call see so “last century!”
4 Favorite Utility Sites:
Loads of links for the frequent flyer.
USA Customizable Travel Guides
Build your own travel guide to any country
Lots of free articles on how to speak in public and use presentation software effectively.
Another extensive site with tons of links, articles, tools and ideas on the effective use of presentation software.
4Sites for Fun:
The Best of the Hubble
Amazing slideshow from the Hubble Telescope.
Excellent set of online optical illusions.
Buzzwords (n. Important-sounding words or phrases used primarily to impress laypersons) are listed and poked fun at. Check out the "Whack of the Week" as great examples of how not to communicate. (Thanks to Joan Eisenstodt for this link suggestion.)
Reviews on all the latest films from dozens of film critics in one location with a weighted overall score. This Webby Award winner also has music, DVD, and video game reviews.
